De l'Europe Hotel

Around 1480, the Rondeel, a semicircular tower on the Amstel River, stood on this site as part of the city wall. Its shape is still visible in the facade of the current hotel.

After its demolition in 1633, an inn was built there, later called Hotel Rondeel. This was demolished in 1895 to make way for Hotel De L’Europe, which opened in 1896 and was designed by W. Hamer in the Neo-Renaissance style.

The hotel underwent numerous expansions and renovations, including a covered entrance in 1910 and several buildings on Nieuwe Doelenstraat from 1986 onwards.

Shortly before WWII, it served as a filming location for Alfred Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent, and during the war, it was used by German officers of Luftgaukommando Holland.
