The school was originally built in 1904 as the third HBS (higher secondary school) with a five-year program. It was later renamed the Amstellyceum. Since 2013, the building has been home to the Metis Montessori Lyceum.
The school was used by the German occupying forces during World War II, likely for police purposes. Many students were deported during the war.
