Stelling van Amsterdam - Stenen Silo

The grain silo was built between 1896 and 1898, designed by Jacob Frederik Klinkhamer, with the cooperation of Adolf Leonard van Gendt, at the request of Korthals Altes, director of the Company for the Exploitation of Grain Silos and Warehouses. As early as 1888, he had advocated for its construction to supply Amsterdam with grain in the event of a siege, as part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam.

The 105-meter-long building contained 60 chutes, each measuring 15 m², and could store 17 million kilos of grain. The silo featured a boiler house, chimney, and staff quarters in an eclectic style. Grain was transported to ships and trains via conveyor belts. The central cleaning building housed steam engines, cleaning equipment, and the office. In 1902, pneumatic grain elevators were introduced, allowing ships to be unloaded more quickly.
