The military bakery in Amsterdam supplied bread to the garrison and surrounding towns. Located on the site of the former Rijks Lijnbanen railway line, it consisted of a residential main building with a factory-like extension.
The staff varied: eleven workers around 1910, sixty in 1945, later supplemented by prisoners. The capacity was modest compared to larger bakeries elsewhere.
After the German occupation, the bakery was taken over on May 5, 1945, and served as a central facility for camps housing political offenders until 1948. Renovation plans followed in 1956: ovens removed, kitchen and living quarters installed.
The surrounding area changed dramatically due to the demolition of industry to make way for housing. The main building and the double caretaker's residence still remain.
