At the gate of the former Herkenrode barracks, on the left, hangs a memorial plaque with the names of the civilians executed by the Germans during the First World War.
On the right stands a "bronze soldier," a reference to "The Pilot of the Eleventh Line Regiment." The statue was created by Marc Cox and unveiled on November 15, 1984.
It stands on a pedestal of Namur sandstone.
It is not a war memorial, but rather a folkloric statue that commemorates and pays tribute to the Eleventh Line Regiment, with which Hasselt was associated for 130 years until its disbandment in 1956.
