After the disastrous year of 1672, the ramparts, moat, and bastions were built to protect Nieuwpoort from the enemy. Along with Schoonhoven, Nieuwpoort formed a key part of the Old Dutch Waterline.
In the past, fortifications were connected by a bear, a brick dam with a sharp edge (a mule bridge) separating the moat from the outer waters of the Lek River. Two so-called monks are depicted on this bear, intended to hinder the enemy from crossing the moat.
