In this T-shaped farmhouse called "De Hul," the command post of the 1st Company, 3rd Battalion, 44th Infantry Regiment was established in May 1940. Its commander was Captain H. Turkstra.
On May 10, 1940, Captain Turkstra occupied his command post around 2:30 a.m. He and his unit, which consisted of four sections, were responsible for the "East Front" of the Betuwe Line. These sections were located around Echteld, and one section was located along the Waal River dike.
On May 10, 1940, around 8:30 p.m., they were forced to abandon their positions and move towards Ijzendoorn. The command post was then also moved in that direction.
