Founded in 1880 by Fré Utermöhlen, the company began as a trader in antiseptic bandages. From 1890 onwards, it began producing its own products, with a factory on Weesperzijde from 1897 onwards. During the siege of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, Utermöhlen was a vital supplier and was included in the military coal budget.
Utermöhlen's first-aid bandages were used internationally, including in foreign wars. During the First World War, production increased significantly; due to a shortage of cotton wool from Germany, a separate factory was opened in Emst. In 1901, the company received the designation "Royal," and Utermöhlen was later knighted.
After 1955, the company moved to Molukkenstraat and, since 1989, has been located in Wolvega, where it still exists as Koninklijke Utermöhlen N.V., without its own production facilities.
The old factory on the Weesperzijde later had a civilian function as a warehouse and fire brigade headquarters.
