Along the edge of the Haarlemmermeerpolder, between Ringvaart and Spieringweg, lies an outpost of Fort bij Vijfhuizen. This group of bunkers was built to defend an impenetrable strip and to shelter retreating troops.
In 1916, 21 splinter-proof concrete shelters were built here, along with machine gun and artillery positions, partly buried beneath earthen bodies. The design was based on German trench models from Cologne.
These structures are among the oldest reinforced concrete military structures in the world.
Today, many of these bunkers are still visible on the grounds of the Haarlemmermeer Golf Club.
