Memorial V1 Impact Zelzate

On 19 February 1945, five months after the liberation of Zelzate, a German V1 bomb struck near the town. The bomb landed between Assenedesteenweg and Denderdreve, causing enormous damage. There were no immediate fatalities, but the daughter of Maurice Vereecke and Julienne Van Kerkhove died shortly after the impact. As a memorial to her, her parents left a half-fallen tree standing. This tree is still there today. In addition to the human suffering, there was also considerable material damage, with 151 homes damaged!
