It is in this place that on June 8, 1944, residents of Houesville, despite the risks of serious reprisals incurred, buried the bodies of 4 American paratroopers killed in the night during the fighting for the liberation of the town.
They belonged to the 101st American Airborne Division, 3rd battalion of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, and mainly to Company H cominanded by Captain Cecil L. Simmons.
These graves were tended and flowered by the people of Houesville, and were not removed until the spring of 1945.
The bodies of Pfc Delbert L Troutman (H/502nd) and Cpl Wilbur E Campbell (HQ 3bn/502nd) have since been repatriated to the United States. The other two, Pfc Ray E Sanders (H/502nd) and Pvt Adrian J Pelletier (H/502nd) rest with their comrades at the Colleville sur Mer American Cemetery.
