Stumbling Stones Herzog-Max-Strasse 16

These brass plaques (Stolpersteine or stumbling stones), placed on April 25, 2013, commemorate:
* BERTA BRANDES-HERZSTEIN (born 1886, deported to Riga in 1941, murdered)
* SALLY BRANDES (born 1882, forced labor in 1940 in the Tiefbauamt (building yard) of Bamberg, deported to Riga in 1941, murdered)
* FRITZ BRANDES (born 1915, in custody in Buchenwald in 1938, fled to England in 1939)

These Stolpersteine lie here for Jewish war victims, persecuted, deported, and murdered during World War II. The third stone commemorates a family member who was able to flee abroad).

"Stolpersteine” is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of the last voluntary residence of (usually Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque is provided with the victim’s, date of birth, and fate. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: “A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.”
