Fliegerhorst Havelte: Aircraft Hangar

Near the village of Darp, close to the Havelterberg, remnants can still be found of the German airfield built during the Second World War: Fliegerhorst Havelte. The site once included runways, bunkers, bomb craters, and several hangars.

The hangars were used to store and maintain aircraft. Built of concrete or brick, they were often camouflaged with earth or vegetation to make them less visible from the air. In this way, they offered protection against bombings and attacks.

After the war the airfield was never used again. Many structures disappeared, but around Darp you can still see remains such as hangar foundations, earth walls, and the outlines of runways. Today, the area is part of the Holtingerveld nature reserve, where nature and wartime history come together.
