Herstal

The old town hall of Herstal has four memorial plaques commemorating soldiers who died in the First World War.

Those commemorated are:

ALEXANDRE Martin G.J., aged 26, from Herstal, soldier in the 17th Line Regiment, killed in action at Ledegem, Sint Pieter, on October 1, 1918.

BOURDON Jean, 27 years old, born in Herstal, corporal in the 1st Line Regiment, killed in action on November 1, 1918, 10 days before the armistice, in Adegem.

BOUCHA Edmond, 19 years old, from Herstal, war volunteer, soldier in the 2nd Cyclist Regiment, killed by a bullet to the head on January 31, 1917, in Stuivekenskerke. NB: his file gives his name as BOUCHÉ.

CABOLET René Jean M., 20 years old, born in Herstal, soldier in the 2nd battalion of 120 mm howitzers, of the 11th artillery, killed in action in Moorslede on October 2, 1918.

CLERDENT J.J., 26 years old, from Herstal, soldier (armorer) in the ammunition platoon, killed by a head wound on March 6, 1918, in Stuivekenskerke.

DEFLANDRE J.L., 23 years old, born in Herstal, soldier in the 1st Grenadier Regiment, killed by shrapnel to the head on March 8, 1918, in Nieuwpoort.

DEBATTICE Jean H.L., 28 years old, from Herstal, soldier with the Artillery of the Fortress of Liège at the fort of Chaudfontaine, died of injuries sustained in Chenée on August 15, 1914.

LELANGE Max J.F., 31 years old, born in Herstal, assistant physician with the 3rd Army Division, killed in action on October 24, 1914, in Kaaskerke by shrapnel.

GHAYE Henri, 21 years old, from Herstal, soldier in the 13th Line Regiment, died from shrapnel wounds to the abdomen on March 18, 1916, in Diksmuide.

GORDENNE Hubert, 22 years old, born in Herstal, soldier in the 23rd Line Regiment, died from injuries sustained from shrapnel from an aerial bomb in the Belgian Military Hospital in Hoogstade on September 17, 1917.

HENROTAX Paul, 21 years old, born in Herstal, adjutant in the 4th Chasseurs (hunters) regiment, died from injuries sustained (bullet to the head) at the Hôpital Militaire Belge in Beveren-aan-de-IJzer on October 11, 1917.

HONDERBEIN Pierre J., 26 years old, from Herstal, soldier in the 15th Line Regiment, killed in action in Ingelmunster on October 16, 1918.

HAUREGARD Jacques, 30 years old, born in Herstal, adjutant in the 10th Line Regiment, died in an accident caused by an explosion in the ammunition depot in Boezinge on June 4, 1917.

LAHAY Jean L., 23 years old, born in Herstal, soldier in the 6th Line Regiment, died from injuries sustained (shrapnel and gangrene infection) in the Belgian Military Hospital in Beveren-aan-de-IJzer on October 16, 1917.

LEROY Victor, 23 years old, born in Herstal, soldier in the 2nd Army Division, died from wounds to his left side in Ledegem on October 14, 1918.

LESUISSE Jos H., 21 years old, from Herstal, soldier in the 1st Grenadier Regiment, killed in action in Boezinge on March 30, 1917.

MÉLOTTE Lambert L.J.M., 23 years old, born in Herstal, corporal in the 2nd Grenadier Regiment, died from injuries sustained in Sint-Joris on March 12, 1918.

MARTIN Theodoor J.T., 22 years old, born in Herstal, soldier in the 14th Line Regiment, killed by a grenade explosion at an outpost on May 21, 1916, in Kaaskerke.

MANIQUET Jean J., 24 years old, from Herstal, corporal in the 18th Line Regiment, killed in action at Handzame on October 14, 1918.

MAWET Pierre L.J., 31 years old, from Herstal, soldier in the 27th Line Regiment, killed in action in Holsbeek on September 12, 1914.

MESTEROM Nicolas G., 19 years old, from Herstal, soldier in the 4th Line Regiment, killed in action on June 12, 1915, and missing ever since.

MONSEUR Charles J., 22 years old, born in Herstal, soldier in the 5th Army Division, died on June 27, 1916, in the Belgian Military Hospital in Hoogstade from injuries sustained during a troop movement after a train collision.

MAKA Jacques A., 24 years old, from Herstal, soldier in the 7th Line Regiment, missing in Sint-Joris since October 20, 1914.

MAKA Henri, 24 years old, from Herstal, soldier in the 5th Line Regiment, died on May 19, 1916, in the Belgian Military Hospital in Hoogstade from injuries sustained from an aerial bomb.

PIEL Jean, aged 17, from Herstal, soldier in the 4th Line Regiment, killed in action at Zuidschote on April 27, 1915, three days before his 18th birthday.

REQUILEZ Jos, 25 years old, from Herstal, soldier in the 3rd Lancers Regiment, died from injuries sustained on August 26, 1914, in Werchter.
