Monument Ernst Thälmann

This monument was erected in memory of Ernst Thälmann.

Ernst Thälmann (1886–1944) was the leader of the Communist Party of Germany during the Weimar Republic. After the Nazis seized power in January 1933, he attempted to overthrow Hitler through a general strike and later at a rally in February. Shortly thereafter, on March 3, 1933, he was arrested by the Gestapo. Thälmann remained imprisoned for eleven years and was executed in August 1944 on Hitler's orders in the Buchenwald concentration camp.
