Liezele Fortress

The fort of Liezele is without doubt one of the best conserved forts of the fortified area of Antwerp. It was built in 1914 and withstood the ravages of two world wars. Today it is a historical gem located amid a natural preserve. A visit to Fort Liezele is a trip back through time, to the days of August 1914 and May 1940.

Inside the fort, which is covered by a thick layer of earth and concrete, you can visit the former munitions depot, now a museum featuring a multimedia presentation and exhibits of original period uniforms, weapons, photos, etc.

Aboveground you can visit armoured gun copulas, an armoured observation post, trenches and bunkers. You also get a general impression of the fort and its surroundings.

A guide will take you to the former command headquarters of 1914 and 1940, the infirmary, a munitions depot, an armoured artillery copula, the barracks and the prison cells. You will relive history by imagining how the 350 man strong garrison lived and fought. The original drawbridge an a diorama complete it all. Finally, through subterranean galleries, you will arrive in the casemats.

For current visiting hours, please visit the website of the museum.
