Dutch War Graves Kovelswade Cemetery

Kovelswade general cemetery contains 4 Dutch war graves from World War II.

It concerns one soldier:
Gerard Cornelis Everaars, 13 Bt.Lu.A. Killed in action on 11-05-1940 in Voorburg (ZH). His name is mentioned on the War Memorial Leidschendam and Voorburg

Three Resistance Fighters:
Johannes Marinus Altena, driver mechanic. During a transport with dropped ammunition in a captured German truck, the truck was shot at by a British fighter plane. Altena was one of the three occupants, all three of whom died on 16-04-1945.
A simple crucifix on the site of the shooting has been placed in memory of those killed.

Wolter Jacobus Heukels, official PTT. Wolter Heukels was a member of the resistance group the Ordedienst. Heukels taught members of the Knokploeg Utrecht how to eavesdrop on telephone conversations conducted by Germans via a clandestine telephone post in the main building of the Dutch Railways in Utrecht. Heukels was arrested by the Sicherheitsdienst and shot on 22 January 1945 as a reprisal for an attack on the Jaffa metal factory. A simple plaque commemorates this incident.

Georg Christiaan Kerstholt, shoemaker. He died on 08-05-1945 in Utrecht.

Civilian victim
M. Heikoop, pastor. M. Heikoop died on November 6, 1944 when a bomb fell on Building III of the City and Academic Hospital of Utrecht.
