Resistance Memorial Wittem

The Memorial of resistance on the Eyserlinde in Wittem (community of Gulpen-Wittem) is a group of statues, made out of one piece of natural stone from Limburg.
Three surviving relatives carry a war victim.

The text on the front side is as following:
"THE FALLEN ONE".

The text on the rear side is as following:
"THE MONASTERY AND HEADMASTERSHIP WITTEM / THE FORMER RESISTANCE DISTRICT OF GULPEN.
WITH MANY IN THIS LAND THANKING THEIR GOD AND FATHER FOR EVERYTHING
COMMEMORATE IN JESUS CHRIST THEIR FALLEN
1940 - 1945"

The names of 22 soldiers, two civilians and nineteen people of the resistance who were killed by war or resistance are engraved on both sides of the socle.

They came from the following villages and cities:
Bocholtz
Simpelveld
Wijlre
Scheulder
Mechelen
Filing
Vaals
Nijswiller
Lemiers
Gulpen
Epen

The monument is dedicated to the Christian thought of sacrifice: the "fallen one" and the "sacrificed" are carried in the hands of the surviving relatives.
