POW Camp Groß-Hesepe (Emslandlager XI - Stalag VI C)

From 15 June 1938 till September 1939, Groß Hesepe served as penal camp. But in Septeber 1939, Groß-Hesepe came under control of the Wehrmacht and transformed into a POW-camp (part of Stalag VI C).

Camp Groß-Hesepe held Polish,Soviet and Italian POW's in the period: 1939-1945. Alot of Soviet and Italian POW's died in Camp Groß-Hesepe. The camp was liberated by Canadian forces in April 1945.

After the war, Groß-Hesepe was reused under the name: "Justizvollzugsanstalt Lingen I, Außenabteilung Groß Hesepe. The prison complex is still in service.

Camp Groß-Hesepe is one of the best preserved Emslandlager camps today. Most of the original camp buildings managed to survive the time.
