This war cemetery contains the remains of 133 French soldiers in a mass grave. They fell during a French counter-attack in September 1914. Among the burials is the famous French poet Charles Péguy.
The mass grave was temporary and a joint grave for French and German soldiers.
After the war, the German soldiers were reburied elsewhere.
Since 1932, this is the definitive form and is still the authentic location of the first mass grave.
Since 2024, it is a UNESCO heritage monument.
