Memorial Taeke Schuilenga

The monument in the 'Tiesinga grove near Fochteloo was erected in memory of the resistance fighter Taeke Schuilenga from Surhuisterveen.

Taeke Schuilenga was born on October 29, 1878 in Surhuisterveen. He was director-owner of the local rusk factory. In 1941 the Schuilenga family was arrested for illegal activities. Taeke was released on bail for his share of the food supply. On November 4 he was arrested again to be interrogated in Leeuwarden. After that, Schuilenga was taken to the Scholtenhuis in Groningen. After an interrogation, he was shot in the Tiesinga grove near Fochteloo without trial and left in a ditch.

The Silbertanne murder, in which the victims were provoked to their homes under false pretenses and then murdered in a lonely place, was a retaliation by land guard Pier Nobach from Doezem. On October 30, 1943, the resistance wanted to attack the infamous land guard, but a mistake killed Nobach's son. Pier Nobach had a lot of influence at the Sicherheitsdienst in the Scholtenhuis in Groningen and as revenge Schuilenga was killed.
