Memorial Jetze Veldstra

Jetze Veldstra was in contact with a group that possessed a secret transmitter and used it to communicate with England. Broadcasts were made from his farm, which was located in a secluded spot on the Tjeukemeer lake. A Gestapo spy managed to infiltrate the group, which was subsequently rounded up, and the SD also got hold of Veldstra.

He was arrested on 6 September 1943 and transferred via Assen and Groningen to the Oranje Hotel in Scheveningen. After six months, he was transported to Haren and in July 1944 to Utrecht. Around “Mad Tuesday” (5 September 1944), he was transported to Germany via Amersfoort. After being in various camps, he eventually ended up in Neuengamme near Hamburg on 17 January 1945.

Initially, it was assumed that Jetze Veldstra died there on 25 January 1945 of pneumonia. Later reports cast doubt on this, as revealed by the text on the information pillar at the monument. It is still unknown where he died and where God took His child to the Father's house.
