On 2 May 2015, a monument was unveiled in Haskerhorne (Friesland) to commemorate the Frisian-Canadian soldier Gaele Visser. He was born in Haskerhorne on 28 August 1920 and emigrated to Canada in 1930.
Gaele enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942 and served with the Algonquin Regiment. He fought in the liberation of Western Europe and was killed in action on 23 April 1945 near Oldenburg, Germany. Gaele Visser is buried at the Canadian War Cemetery in Holten.
The monument contains information about both his private life and his military career.
Frisian translation of monument: Son of Rein A. Visser and Janke Miedema. Gaele was a kind and talented young man. He had a great knowledge of the Bible and a strong faith in God. He emigrated to Millgrove in Canada in 1930.
