Memorial Oudegracht

A statue of Saint Martin has been placed in front of the church. The statue was ready in plaster in 1940 and kept hidden from the occupying forces. Sint Martinus van Tours is the patron saint of the city of Utrecht. A snake is under the horse as a symbol of evil trampled on by the horse.
A plaque is attached to the left wall in front of the entrance to the Sint Martinus church.

It's a memorial plaque that has been placed to thank that Utrecht city and this parish were saved during WWII.

IN GRADUATION FOR THE VISIBLE PROTECTION OF THE CITY OF UTRECHT AND IN PARTICULAR OF THE PAROCHIA DURING THE EARLY YEARS OF MAY 1940-MAY1945, THIS ST MARTINUS MONUMENT WAS ESTABLISHED.

THE STRAIGHTY DISCLOSURE HAD PLACE ON 7 NOVEMBER 1948 THROUGH HIS EMINENCE JOHANNES CARDINAL DE JONG
