Golden Gate National Cemetery

The National Cemeteries in the U.S.A. are used for war graves, graves of U.S. military personnel, veterans and their spouses but not exclusively so. There are also special state veteran cemeteries.

The Golden Gate National Cemetery contains the graves of 44 German and Italian prisoners of war from World War II. They were captured in North Africa. They died in the camps: Camp Beale and Camp Cook in California, and Camp Rupert in Idaho. The graves can be found in section E. There are also 3 Commonwealth war graves from the Second World War.

In 2008, there were in total 139,037 graves on this cemetery.

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz is buried on this cemetery. There are also the graves of 44 German and Italian POW's from the Second World War.

The Golden Gate National Cemetery contains American war graves from different periods. The cemetery includes several graves of killed Medal of Honor recipients. There are also 27 victims of the Port Chicago disaster (17 July 1944) buried here.
