This is one of the national memorials of South Africa for the victims of World War I.
Delville Wood was a series off engagements during the summer of 1916 and marked the baptism of fire of the 1st South African Brigade as part of the 9th Scottish Division. The soldiers soon gave it the name of 'Devil's Wood' as the South Africans entered the battle with 3,433 men and after 6 days they were relieved but only 750 remained.
South Africa purchased the land after the war, rather than being gifted it, and it has been replanted with South African species of trees and the South African Memorial built.
