He was surprised by a German counterattack while on patrol and was seriously wounded in the ensuing battle. He was taken to the hospital in the General de Bons Barracks in Grave, where he died.
He was temporarily buried in a field grave on the grounds opposite the barracks.
On 17 May 1946, he was reburied at the British War Cemetery in Uden.
