John Rolleston Heap crashed his Hawker Tempest V, EJ802, from 274 Squadron in Odiliapeel.
Heap was part of a patrol of eight aircraft over Venlo. Immediately after take-off, he experienced engine trouble and attempted to return to Volkel. When that failed, he attempted an emergency landing, but hit the ground quite hard and crashed into an earth wall. The aircraft broke into pieces and burst into flames. Heap was thrown from his aircraft and was killed instantly.
