During the final Soviet offensive operation against Berlin, the remaining tanks of the schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 503 were incorporated as part of the SS-Panzer-Regiment 11 for the fighting along the Berlin axis itself. Starting on the 16.04.1945, it would hold the lion’s share of the Regiment’s 400+ armour kills until resistance finally ceased on the 02.05.1945. For his Abteilung’s outstanding achievements during this time Herzig would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
