    Biography

    On March 25th, 1918, Eberhard von Schuckmann enrolled in the German Imperial Army. He was posted as a Fähnrich (Cadet) in the 3rd Imperial Guards Foot Regiment (Kaiserliches Garde-Regiment zu Fuss) which took part in the French campaign within the 5th Guards Infantry division. During this campaign, he was injured near Champagne on October 4th, 1918. He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class (EK2) and the Casualty Medal in Gold (Verwundetenabzeichen)on October 11th, 1918. For his contribution to WW I, he was to receive the Honorary Cross for Frontsoldiers (Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer) on January 15th, 1935.

    After WW I, von Schuckmann stayed in the Reichswehr and on January 1st, 1920, was promoted to Leutnant (Lieutenant) in the 15 Schützen-Bataillon. Due to the reduction of the Reichswehr he was dismissed on May 15th, 1920, only to be re-employed on April 1st, 1923, again as a Leutnant in the 9th Company of 6th Infantry Regiment in Flensburg. Promotion to Company Commander (Kompagniechef) within the 67th Infantry Regiment followed on June 1st, 1938.

    At the start of WW 2, Eberhard von Schuckmann was promoted to Major and on February 14th, 1941 appointed Commander of III Bataillon of 230 Infantry Regiment. September 1st, 1941 saw him promoted to Oberstleutnant. Due to wartime circumstances, Oberstleutnant von Schuckmann was put in charge of 230 Infantry Regiment. On December 26th, 1941, his formal appointment to Commander followed.
    On March 21st, 1942 he was awarded the Ehrenblattspange des Deutschen Heeres (Honorary Clasp of the German Army) for his achievements in the battle of Federowka on the Eastern Front. On June 29th, 1942 he was transfered to 542nd Infantry Regiment as commander where he received the German Cross in Gold (Deutsches Kreuz) on August 27th, 1942. A few days before, on August 15th, 1942 he had been promoted to Oberst

    Oberst von Schuckmann was appointed Commander of 387th Infantry Division on February 15th, 1943 and on August 8th, 1943, he was promoted to General-major (Major-general). On August 1st, 1944 he was transfered to the 352nd Infantry Division, again as Commander. Following a disagreement with his superior, he was transfered to the Reserve of Wehrkreis IV (Army Region) in Dresden on October 5th, 1944. On November 11th, Eberhard von Schuckmann was sentenced by the Reichkriegsgericht (State Court Martial) to two years in prison for insubordination, he was acquitted of a second charge. However, due to his service record, his sentence was suspended on December 5th, 1944 with the annotation that no further promotion could be granted. From Janaury 1st, 1945 onwards, he took charge of the 71st Infantry division and was made prisoner of war by the Americans near St. Veith/Kärnten on May 8th, 1945
    In 1966, Eberhard von Schuckmann died in a planecrash in Peru.
