Awarded for destroying 32 enemy tanks as the gunner of an 8.8 cm Flak gun. Of these, it is known that he destroyed 8 in the Low Countries during the Battle of France, 8 on the 11.11.1941 in the Newabogen-Usti Toßno area (near Leningrad) and a further 5 over open sights at Krasny Bor on the 25.12.1941. In this last engagement he forced a further 5 to retreat.
