"For courageous and skilful conduct as commander of our destroyer "Piet Hein", also group commander 1st fighter group, in the sea battle in Lombok Strait from 19 to 20 February 1942, during which an enemy force consisting of heavy cruisers and destroyers was attacked, with the result that the enemy was inflicted heavy losses and during which our destroyer "Piet Hein" and most of its crew went down fighting."

Royal decree no.6 Posthume, Jan Marie Lodewijk Ignatius Chömpff died from exhaustion on a raft in the Bandung Strait. His MWO was posthumously credited in the register dated 16 April 1942.
Deep-water minesweeper named after him and launched on 10 May 1960.
