Awarded for his independently conducted attack on a much larger enemy tank force on the 15.06.1941 west of Capuzzo. By this action he prevented the enemy tank forces from continuing their advance to the north, an act which would have seen them intercept key German supply forces with devastating consequences for the whole Panzer-Regiment 8. However with these the Germans were in the event able to throw back and destroy the Allied tank forces. Kümmel would earn the name “Lion of Capuzzo” for his actions here.
