Awarded for his successes on the Normandy battlefield. In mid-July 1944 he took over leadership of a Kampfgruppe of which parts were encircled. With four men he broke through to the surrounded elements, led them out and established a new defensive line around Le Port (south of Carentan). In further fighting, when the enemy had achieved a breakthrough, he counterattacked with a platoon & tank support and was able to repel the attackers. A day later, he fought off allied probes while his own troops were displacing, and thus prevented his Kampfgruppe from being fragmented.
