Ellis H. Hatfield was the son of Calvin Ellis Hatfield and Nancy Jane Hatfield. He spent his childhood at Millerton end graduated of Chariton High School in 1936. He worked at a defense plant in Chicago and was inducted on June 2nd, 1944. Late 1944 he was send to Europe and participated in the final allied drive into Germany.
He was married to Wilma Hatfield born Moss. The couple had three chidren, Melvin, Ellis Dale and Gerald.

PFC Hatfield was serving as an ammunition bearer with a unit that became surrounded by a numerically superior German force. Attempting with a comrade to reach a nearby U.S. machine gun post, the comrade was wounded. Ellis was killed instantly by machine gun fire while attempting to carry that comrade to safety.

Awarded posthumously.
