He played the guitar. Purchased a guitar from Sears and gave it to his brother (Elijah) to keep until he returned from the army. He never returned. The guitar is still in the family.

"For gallantry in action,7 March,1944,on the Anzio Beachhead,Italy.When his companywas unable to call for supporting fire on an attacking enemyforce,Private First Class Wingo,platoon runner,went foward to a positionalong the enemy's route of advance and with a rocket launcherdelivered such accurate harassing fire on the enemy that they were unable to cross avital bridge.When his rocket-launcher became unserviceable,Private First Class Wingocontinued hisfire,using a model1903 rifle,with grenade launcher,until he was rendered semi-conscious by an enemy morter shell.Upon recoveringhe resumed delivery of accurate rifle firewith an M1 riflewhile his platoon moved to another position.Upon rejoining his platoon,he contiued fiing until killed in action.Private First ClassWingo's gallantry and devotion to dutyare exmplary of the high traditionsof the Armyof the United States."
