"For Heroic service in the conquest of Iwo Jima. As his platoon leader had become a casualty and his platoon was badly disorganized during a critical stage of the attack, Bennett, with complete disregard for his own safety, and inspite of intense enemy fire, moved forward to assume command of the platoon. His tactical knowledge, cool leadership and willingness to expse himself were principal features in returning the platoon as an efficient fighting unit to the accomplishment of the mission"
