During the time period 19.-26.12.1943 the left wing of the 257. Infanterie-Division found itself in the centre of heavy defensive combat against hostile attempts to break through towards Nikopol. In this time Hauptmann Gust and his III./Grenadier-Regiment 477 particularly distinguished themselves as the cornerstone of the German defensive line. Following fierce close combat against enemy tanks and infantry they succeeded in holding Boshidar and the hill to the west of the town. Gust would be awarded the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this feat.

Awarded for his achievements during the defensive battles near Ergli. On the evening of the 14.09.1944 he took over the sector in this area as the Soviet 3rd Shock Army began a six-day offensive battle against the defending German Korps. At the disposal of the Soviet army was 18 rifle divisions and 5 tank brigades. In the fighting that took place here Gust was able to successfully defend the western part of Ergli for days, being the soul of the resistance during the bitter combat. He would be recognized appropriately for his achievements here.
