Biography

Peter Lynes completed a tour of operations with 57 Squadron in Wellington’s from June 1941 to March 1942, a second tour of duty with 50 Squadron in Lancaster’s from June 1942 to March 1943, and was killed on 6th June 1944 during his third tour, when with 83 Squadron of Path Finder Force, his aircraft being shot down by a night fighter

"This N.C.O. was posted to 50 Squadron with effect from 22nd September 1942, and has carried out 31 sorties and 184.15 hours operational flying. At all times he has carried out his sorties in a cheerful and efficient manner helping to set a high standard of morale. He has helped to bomb most of Germany’s heavily fortified cities and on 17th October 1942 took part in the highly successful Le Creusot daylight raid. As a wireless operator he was most efficient and was well thought of by his specialist officer. For his enthusiasm, efficiency and cheerful determination I consider he is worthy of the non-immediate award of the Distinguished Flying Medal."
