According to Siebauer, after being in the American field, the group was stopped by 2 MPs. Schmidhuber said something and the Americans immediately told them to raise their hands. The MPs started shooting, someone from the team shot back and killed the 2 MPs. Schmidhuber was also hit during that shooting. Siebauer is not entirely sure if Schmidhuber was immediately dead or injured. Schmidhuber, who spoke poor English, had been ordered to say nothing. Kurt Siebauer had the information of the returned members of the Schmidhuber team. Siebauer team members were convinced that Schmidhuber had put his people at risk by speaking. Members of the group that Siebauer was with were completely finished with Wolfgang Schmidhuber after that action. If he were assigned to them, they would shoot him. According to the data from the Deutsche Dienststelle, Wolfgang Schmidhuber died on 21.12.1944 at 03.14 o'clock east of Malmedy. Skorzeny also told something about Schmidhuber.
