During the defensive battles of the 14. Panzer-Division SW of Cherkassy, at the end of February 1944, the Soviets succeeded in overrunning the Bataillon staff of the II./Pz.Gren.Rgt. 103. In response to this Obergefreiter Promesberger launched a counterattack on his own initiative that managed to push the Soviets back to their jump-off positions and recapture the old German line. For this action he was awarded the Knight’s Cross.
