Biography

Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, Flight Sergeant Francis Greenwood was on June 11th, 1943 part of the crew of Handley Page Halifax JB785 (fellow crewmembers Pilot Officer George Racine Herbert, Sergeant Ernest Cassingham, Sergeant R. H. Makin, Sergeant Ronald Boone, Pilot Officer Archibald Wallace and Sergeant Frank Stewart) on a mission to Münster. On the return flight the aircraft was shot down at 02.40 hrs by Leutnant Werner Baake. The aircraft crashed near Giessenburg in the Netherlands. Pilot Officer Wallace and Sergeant Makin managed to escape the plane by parachute. They became POW. The other crew members were killed and were buried at Crooswijk.
