Biography

Rear Gunner, Pilot Officer Archibald Wallace was on June 11th, 1943 part of the crew of Handley Page Halifax JB785 (fellow crewmembers Pilot Officer George Racine Herbert, Sergeant Ernest Cassingham, Sergeant R. H. Makin, Flight Sergeant Francis Greenwood, Pilot Officer Sergeant Ronald Boone and Sergeant Frank Stewart ) on a sortie to Münster. On the return flight at 02.40 hrs the aircraft was shot down by Leutnant Werner Baake. The aircraft crashed at Giessenburg the Netherlands. Pilot Officer Wallace and Sergeant Makin managed to escape with their parachutes. They were taken POW. The other crewmembers were killed and buried at Crooswijk.
Wallace managed to get to Turnhout with help of the resistance, where he was captured on June 19th, 1943. He was transported to Stalag IIIa and was liberated in May 1945 by Soviet forces.
