Lawrence Chartrand was of Roman Catholic faith, fluent in English and French, and worked as a labourer before enlisting.
Lawrence was married to Alice Chartrand, and they lived together in Camperville. His mother, Vernique Chartrand, also resided in the same town. Lawrence was known to be a devoted husband and son, supporting his family both emotionally and financially.
Lawrence enlisted in the Canadian Active Service Force at Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, joining the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He rose to the rank of Acting Lance Sergeant, demonstrating leadership and courage. His service took him to France and Germany during the Second World War.
Lawrence Chartrand was initially reported Killed in Action on June 8, 1944, during the Normandy campaign in France. However, a later inquiry revealed that he had died while a prisoner of war, and was murdered—a tragic and harrowing end to a life of service.
His remains were respectfully reburied in the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery in France.
A Memorial Cross was sent to both his widow, Alice, and his mother, Vernique. His widow received a War Service Gratuity of $768.41. No formal will was found, and his estate was administered by the Department of National Defence, Estates Branch.
