Biography

Roger Joseph Firman was raised in a Roman Catholic household, he spoke English fluently and had some familiarity with French, which was occasionally spoken at home. He completed high school before entering the workforce.

Before enlisting, Firman worked as a driver and mechanic, demonstrating proficiency with heavy and light trucks, motorcycles, farm tractors, and tracked vehicles. He had farming experience and was employed at the time of his enlistment. His mechanical aptitude and clerical skills were noted in his military records.

On November 11, 1940, Firman enlisted in the Canadian Active Service Force in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. His principal duty was as a driver, and he attained the rank of Corporal. His service took him overseas, where he disembarked in Liverpool and was involved in operations in Normandy.

Firman was murdered by Waffen-SS soldiers on the 8th of June, 1944.

Firman was married to Vera T. Firman, and together they had two children. His residence at the time of enlistment was 101 Bond Street in Transcona. His mother, Emilie Firman, also played a significant role in his life and received a Memorial Cross, as was his widow Vera. After Firman's death, Vera remarried and became known as Vera Bell, residing in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, England.
