Lawrence Roderick Guiboche was a member of the Métis community. He grew up speaking Cree and English and worked as a fisherman before enlisting in the Canadian Army. On November 12, 1941, at the age of 18, he joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, part of the Canadian Active Service Force, and was assigned the regimental number H/42018. He was married to Cecile Guiboche and had one daughter, Lucy Dorothy.
Guiboche underwent military training in Canada and was deployed overseas in April 1942. He served in the United Kingdom before being sent to France as part of the Allied invasion of Normandy. On June 6, 1944, he landed in France during the D-Day operations. Just two days later, on June 8, 1944, he was reported missing in action. Subsequent investigations revealed that he had been captured and executed by German forces in what became known as the Château d’Audrieu massacre, where 31 Canadian soldiers were murdered after being taken prisoner.
His death was officially confirmed by the Canadian military. His widow and mother each received a Memorial Cross in recognition of his sacrifice.
