John William Hill was born in England. He emigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he lived at 580 Alexander Avenue. Prior to his military service, Hill worked as a bushman, though he had no formal technical or collegiate qualifications. He enlisted in the Canadian Active Service Force on June 7, 1940, at the age of 23, joining the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. His regimental number was H-40561, and he held the rank of Lance Corporal.

Hill's military service spanned several years during World War II. He was deployed overseas and served in various theaters, including the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. His service record indicates that he was vaccinated, medically examined, and found fit for duty.

Tragically, John William Hill was murdered by Waffen-SS soldiers on June 8, 1944, during the Normandy campaign in France. His death was officially recorded and communicated to his mother, Mrs. Rose Hannah Hill, who resided at 278 Laura Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was listed as his next of kin and received his personal effects and memorial cross in recognition of his sacrifice.
