Biography

Frederick H. Marych enlisted in the Canadian Active Service Force during World War II and served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. His regimental number was H-41558. Marych was unmarried and listed his mother, Mrs. Tenny Marych, as his next of kin. He was fluent in English and French and had a background in labor work prior to his enlistment. His medical examination indicated he was in good health, with no history of major illnesses or disabilities.

Marych's military service included training and active duty in Canada and overseas. He was attached to various units, including the 100th Canadian Army (Reserve) Training Centre and later transferred to active combat roles. His record shows periods of absence without leave (AWOL), for which he forfeited pay, but he continued to serve honorably.

Tragically, Frederick Marych was confirmed killed in action on June 8, 1944, during the Normandy campaign in France. He was murdered by Waffen-SS soldiers. His remains were initially buried and later reinterred with honor at the Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery in France.

His estate was modest, with a final pay balance of $115.13, which was distributed to his mother, the sole beneficiary under his will. The Canadian government also issued a Memorial Cross to his mother in recognition of his sacrifice.
