George Edward Meakin was a member of the United Church, he worked as a laborer before enlisting in the Canadian Active Service Force on June 17, 1940, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. At the time of enlistment, he was single and listed his mother, Mrs. Jennie Meakin of Birnie, Manitoba, as his next of kin.
Meakin joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and was assigned regimental number H40752. Over the course of his military career, he rose to the rank of Corporal. His service record reflects a series of postings, hospital admissions, promotions, and training courses, including time spent overseas in England before being deployed to France during World War II.
On June 8, 1944, Corporal Meakin was murdered by Waffen-SS soldiers in France, just two days after the D-Day landings. He was initially buried in a temporary grave and later reinterred with honor on Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery in France. His death was officially recorded and communicated to his mother, who received his medals and personal effects, including a leather wallet, identity disc, and a brooch.
His estate, consisting of a modest sum of $79.73, was distributed to his mother as the sole beneficiary under the laws of intestacy.
