Memorial Escape Route

This memorial commemorates the escape route for airmen who were shot down. The route went from the Netherlands to Portugal and hundreds of airmen managed to get to the UK again and were able to fight again.

The resistance was very active in helping these airmen, which was very dangerous. When members of the resistance were caught they were executed.

For airmen the knowledge of escape routes was of great help because it gave perspective that you were able to get home and continue service.

Maarheeze was in the middle of a slight populated area, so one of the most used escape routes was here. The memorial commemorates the many nameless people involved in the escape routes.
